there are more reasons that it is worth a student’s time to take a computer science class in high school. Instead of learning how to code to land a job at Google or Python, there is also a need for proper computer science teachers. How could our society push advocate for an influx of software developers without first giving them proper teachers. This is why some students who do take computer science classes in high school should take up the opportunity to become a teacher because if the advancement for more classes in this subject does continue to go through there will be a need for teachers in such a foreign subject. Also, it is true that you might not need to take an entire course in computer science to operate today’s technology, but some may argue that taking these courses will benefit students in the end. The argument lies behind the fact that we are surrounded by computers whether it be an atm or a self checkout machine at the grocery store. The general use of computers is a necessity in our society and is mostly conquered by the youth in our time. This is another reason as to why computer science should be offered to high schools.
Another reason that computer science should be studied in high school is that it not only helps the computer industry but other industries as well. The growth of computers in society has branched out to other workforces for computers are a necessity for these organizations to operate at their highest point. For example, “A 2014 analysis estimated that there are over 100,000 health, fitness, and medical mobile apps, with the majority focusing on preventive areas such as healthy living, diet and exercise, addiction, stress, relaxation, and sleep” ( IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics Patient Apps for Improved Healthcare). The need for developers stretches out to helping other industries such as this having developers create programs to be used for healthy living and fitness. Specifically on the topic of health, “An increasing number of health care stakeholders are recognizing that human-machine collaboration is critical for the development of cost-effective and potentially cost-saving solutions. Google, IBM, and Microsoft have partnered with a variety of healthcare organizations to implement machine learning solutions for complex problems including medication adherence, cancer treatment, and claims reimbursement” (Google Research Blog). This shows that technology is essential in doing things that humans could not possibly do without a computer such as curing disease. Machines are required to do the thinking that a human cannot do off the top of their head and make the task of saving lives easier as well as more cost efficient. In the end. These are ways that computers are used to make advances in health care and proves why we need more people to study computers and strengthen the industry in numbers.
Many people believe that we are being taken over by computers and losing our sense of humanity. Many people believe that we should stick to our traditions and read physical books and send letters too. The point behind technology is to make things easier and more efficient for the user. While there are many disadvantages to using technology, it is outweighed by the overall benefit from using technology. Besides this, technology is already being implemented into everyday errands and so forth. Classes are taken online, money is accessed over the internet, formal letters are sent through email, and the list goes on. Some people say that letting a computer do everything for you will make you lazy. In opposition to this, other people believe that the convenience given by technology will actually make you more productive because with all the time saved, you can do more things. Also, people say that elders who have not grown up with technology will not be able to adapt to the new implementations of technology in their lives. As a rebuttal, people argue that software developers make the use of technology “user friendly.” This means that everyone, even the elderly should be able to easily access and operate such technology.
All in all, computer science is a relevant subject that should be offered equally in high school. It should be studied in high school to expand the diversity that the computing industry gets in both race and gender. Also, it should be taught in high school because with only a high school education, students will be able to acquire a job with only their high school diploma because after taking part in the computer science courses they will be work ready. Offering computer science in school will expose students to the creative side of coding and help them realize their passion for coding to continue learning through college and finally join the workforce. Computers are the foundation for the future whether it be medical advances or just the ease of daily tasks and the need for more developers in the computer industry is higher than it has ever been.
