To prevent the disease, the South African government pan has encouraged the development of caring for people and children who suffer from HIV and Aids. So they make sure testing is accompanied by counselling to help the person cope, to refer them to support projects and advise them how to change their sexual behaviours so they do not further spread the disease. Setting up support groups for people with HIV and AIDS where people meet others with the illness and discuss common problems, feelings and ways of coping. Making sure people with HIV and AIDS and their families have easy access to the available grants and government support. Setting up community childcare committees to identify and help provide emotional and material support to children in need. Also introducing foster care programs where possible, for children who have lost their parent. Making sure food and nutritional support programs target children in need. All these factors strengthens the community to prevent the wide spread of HIV and AIDS.

Someone in the community that is affected with AIDS can become a councillor. Councillor, is the locally political leadership, they should give moral leadership and should provide a public face for the campaign of stopping HIV and AIDS. Leadership can involve things like using all opportunities to show support for the campaign against AIDS, acting as a role model of how to treat people living with AIDs, encouraging testing and openness and visiting clinics and organisations that assist people with AIDS, mobilising and recruiting volunteers for care projects for ill people and families. Organising a local awareness and raising events and campaigns to change the sexual behaviour and attitudes to people with AIDS and creating openness about the disease by speaking publicly about the issue and publicly supporting people who are open and encouraging voluntary testing and actively and publicly encouraging the reduce of AIDS.
