Dogs and Cats as pets

Cats and dogs are two of the most popular pets nowadays. Some people prefer the company of a cat, while others prefer the company of a dog. I like dogs more, but I think the preference for a dog or for a cat depends on the personality of each person. Even though cats and dogs share several similarities, at the same time they have a lot of differences that make people decide which pet is perfect for them.

First, we should start with the similarities that these pets share. Both are domesticated animals that are kept as pets and they require love and affection from their owner. The most important aspect with both animals is that you can form a bond of loyalty and friendship with them. These two pets will never let you down, they will love you until the last day of their lives.

Now, let's consider the differences. The first difference is grooming. Dogs are harder to keep clean and many breeds need to visit the dog salon really often to have a monthly hair cut, nail cut and health check up. Cats on the other hand, don't need to visit the salon, they groom themselves by licking their own body. They keep their nails the right length by scratching raspy things, and they don't need monthly health check ups. They are cautious about unnecessary risks.

Another difference is the company either pet will give you. Cats are loners, meaning they can spend a lot of time alone without getting lonely. They like spending time away from people and being alone. While dogs are canines, meaning they come from a pack of animals, so you should spend lots of time with your dog so that it doesn’t get lonely and bored.

The final difference is the personality of each animal. You will hear a “meow” or a “purr” from a cat, they do not have ranks that determine their social status. All cats are basically equal, one doesn’t dominate over another. Cats also give off signals. When they hold their tail up it shows a sign of happiness. They are nocturnal, and more flexible than dogs. They also have retractable claws. On the other hand a dog goes woof, bark, growl, or howl, the complete opposite of a cat. The canine group also has a particular social status on how they determine their ranks. The determining factor in dogs is the tail. How high they hold their tail is how they determine ranks. Dogs, are day animals, they sleep all night.

In conclusion, cats and dogs share some similarities but have a lot of differences. Both make great pets. It all depends on your personality in making a decision. If you like company and affection and have a lot of free time, then a dog is the right choice for you. But, if you are more of a loner person and you don't have a lot of free time, then a cat is the perfect choice for you. Both animals will love you unconditionally.
