Everything came back to origin after Tang dynasty. The ancient criticisms encouraged woman to keep chastity to remain unmarried and enjoyed the beauty of ‘bound-feet’, especially in Qing dynasty. During that time, foot binding became so widespread that the majority of Chinese women were turned into cripples who could hardly walk; even the wealthy women could not escape this rule. Moreover, some of young Chinese girls were forced to bid their feet in order to marry with the rich people, because their natural ‘big’ feet were considered as barbarism.
Since the founding of People’s Republic of China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen abolished such ugly rule of ‘bound-feet’ and improved the position of women gradually. Now, in our country, with the economic development, women’s economic status and social status have a great improvement; more and more women join in job. However, such improvement is not very complete, women still cannot find ideal jobs in certain realm, especially in the field of aviation and politics. Women still continuously struggle for an equal share in freedom and status.
By the way, a strange phenomenon happens in China in recent years, women begin to pursuit beauty to improve their positions by plastic surgery. External beauty is the easiest way for people to give a good impression to others. Lots of female starts and models have achieved success and changed their fate from the normal people. However, in my opinion, external beauty looks like the hardware and internal beauty looks like the software. Although the plastic surgery can improve the position of women in certain degrees, internal beauty is more important as the successful operation needs both good hard ware and software equally.
In conclusion, the current role of women in society really depends on the history, culture, economics and form of a country. In the future, for developing countries, it is more concerns to the positions of women. It is only by doing so that they can make the most of this chance to ensure that history does not repeat itself.
