Final Decision: The group believes divorce should be legalized. According to the Office of the Solicitor General, in 2007, there were 7,753 cases of annulment and legal separation. This is a 71.5% increase from the count in 2001. The Social Weather Station survey reveals that 50% of its respondents favored divorce. In 2005, the results showed that only 43% agreed to the proposition. In other words, Filipinos are slowly starting to consider divorce and separation as an option for marriages that turned sour. Similarly, the team is in favor for the proposition because the members of the group feel there are more advantages in legalizing divorce. For example, divorce protects the individuals involved physically. The Annual Human Rights Report says that there was a 91% increase in cases of domestic violence against women and their children within a span of one year. Divorce also provides, more often the not, emotional, financial, and relational advantages for both the spouse and the children. Although commitment is important, the group believes that an individual must consider themselves first before devoting themselves in a relationship. For individuals in a relationship, it is essential they examine their own status and take care of themselves to a certain degree. In addition to this, the group feels that divorce needs to be considered for the benefit of society rather than for the beliefs of the Church. The Church and state are two separate entities whose legislations must not intertwine. While the citizens of the country are predominantly Catholic, there is still a percentage that is not and they must not be discriminated in legalizing or illegalizing divorce. Divorce is in fact allowed for Muslims in the Philippines. This emphasizes the Church’s influence on the government’s decisions. In conclusion, if the divorce is properly managed, it will prove to be more advantages to couples and individuals in unhappy marriages.
