3.

Advantages of a flow meter:

1. A magnetic flow meter provides an unobstructed flow path, so it causes a negligible pressure drop due to its pipe flow measurement function.

2. The magnetic flow meter has a typical turndown ratio of 40:1, which means it can accurately measure a flow rate of as little as 1/40th of its maximum reading. This is higher than the turndown ratio for any of the other commonly used types of pipe flow meter.

3. The typical accuracy for a magnetic flow meter is + 0.5 % of full scale. This is among the best of the various pipe flow meters.

4. The effect of fluid viscosity on flow through a magnetic flow meter is essentially the same as for flow through the pipe itself.

5. The magnetic flow meter can be used for pipe flow measurement of either clean or dirty liquids, including wastewater, corrosive liquids, or slurries.

Disadvantages of turbine flow meters:

1. Generally calibrated for a specific line pressure. Any steam pressure variations will lead to inaccuracies in readout unless a density compensation package is included.

2. Flow straighteners are essential

3. If the flow oscillates, the turbine will tend to over or under run, leading to inaccuracies due to lag time.

4. Wet steam can damage the turbine wheel and affect accuracy.

5. Low flow rates can be lost because there is insufficient energy to turn the turbine wheel.

6. Viscosity sensitive: if the viscosity of the fluid increases, the response at low flow rates deteriorates giving a non-linear relationship between flow and rotational speed. Software may be available to reduce this effect.
