Uses of the Constitutional Theory

When it comes to discussing how somatotypes are used today, it is mostly used for physical health and fitness rather than searching for criminals. At one point criminologists played around with the idea that by studying the different somatotypes of people, they could anticipate which people would commit crimes. And while there did seem to be some correlation between Mesomorphic personalities and criminal activities, there wasn’t enough for this theory to really take off and become a mainstay of criminological theory. The problem was that not every Mesomorphic person committed crimes, and the other types committed crimes as well. It more shown that everyone has the potential to commit crimes, no matter your genetics or backgrounds. Nowadays, the Somatotypes are mostly used with nutritionists and exercise physiologists. Studying the three extremes and how people fall into each helps them to be able to develop better diets and fitness plans for specific types of people depending on their body types. So, although Sheldon’s Constitutional theory did not hold much ground in the criminal justice field, it certainly has many other useful applications
