Fundamentally, what the article upholds is the activity theory of aging. Basically, normal aging occurs when retirees are able to stay busy and continue interacting socially. Many people after retirement become sullen because their lives lose a certain purpose and routine. This must have an effect on their mental condition, and definitely does not aid the normal process of aging. People like June, however, who stay active throughout their elder years seem to be a lot more healthy and a lot less prone to cognitive diseases like dementia. They actually continue to think critically when they work, and through their interactions with peers and others keep neural pathways open; most likely a major component in resisting degenerative diseases. Generally, people who stay active in their later years are happier with their lives. As the theory implies, instead of experiencing retirement as idle time, they go out and do things both social and physical, and that has a great impact on their resistance to disease.

Overall, the study was very interesting. It concluded with results that are not in serious debate. It does seem that there is some sort of direct relationship between the activity level of elderly people and their ability to fight off dementia. It definitely gives everyone something to think about, but in particular, gives an added reason for senior citizens to keep themselves busy and interactive.
