Zeus finds a new wife, which is his sister Hera. Between Zeus and Hera, we see a relationship that is equal. Hera is the queen of the goddesses, beautiful, and a jealous women. Hera was not pleased that Zeus had 100 offspring with mortal women. Zeus provided promiscuity with mortals and there was some kind of relationship with the mortals and Zeus. That is how we got rulers within the mortals because the family that is apparently related to Zeus were able to say that they are more worthy than the others.

Hera eventually had enough and felt humiliated by Zeus. She gathered the other Olympians together and tells them that Zeus is no more important and powerful than them. They agreed with Hera and got together and chained Zeus up to his bed. The combined power of all the Olympian gods could have defeated Zeus, which was one of the most horrifying moments in Zeus’s Life. When the Hundred Handers heard about Zeus’s trouble they rescued him from the chains. Once Zeus was released he had Hera hanged from golden chains in the sky and had Apollo and Poseidon sent to do hard labor. They were sent to build the beautiful city of Troy.

Fear of Zeus’s punishment kept Greeks out of trouble. Zeus would destroy entire cities and civilizations because he felt that the people in that city state were too proud. Another horrifying moment for Zeus was when he encountered mortals engaging in cannibalism, which made him very angry. Zeus was no stranger to cannibalism and because of what his father did to his siblings. So he decides to end humanity by creating a mass flood. It rained heavily for 9 days and the earth started to drown. Only 2 people survived and the way they survived was by building an arc. Zeus’s flood story is similar to biblical story of Noah, who built the arc to save not only humanity, but all life on earth.

Before the rise of Christianity Zeus was the most feared god for thousands of years. Zeus had one more challenger and that challenger was Christ. When Christianity came into the world, it promised salvation in the afterlife and began to gain so mass amounts of followers. The same civilization that worshiped him now started to deny him. They started to deny him because they thought the Greek gods were harsh and did not care about humanity. It was more comfortable to follow Christianity because people didn’t fear death as much as they did before Christianity.
