mother country did not overuse her power. New England should have respected the mother country more. Great Britain did not do anything threatening to justify colonist to war. Colonist might have not understood how Great Britain was working at the time. Charles Inglis a minister wrote, “So far, Britain has not exerted her power. Her number of troops and ships of war here at present, is very little more that she judged to be necessary in time of peace.” This gives some evidence of how Britain did not have many protection, because it was no necessary, or so they thought. Colonists had no justification to go to war the mother country was not doing anything to provoke rebellion.
On the other hand, the colonists were taxed without having a say in what they were being taxed for. Colonists did not know what they were going to be taxed for until it was too late. In Document 2 we read that they wanted to “… defeat those who [wanted] to enslave [them]. The American colonists wanted to get representation and have a say what they were being taxed for. They said it was their duty to fight the taxes that they felt as a burden to their freedom from Britain.
To add to the justification of going to war, colonists would not take any taxation without any representation. The colonists thought that if they had no one to represent them they should not get taxed. As we read a letter from John Dickinson he says that, “… to impose duties on these colonies, not for the regulation of trade… but for the single purpose of levying money upon us.” Dickins tries to say that the British should only regulate their trade and not raise taxes because the colonists had no representation from the Parliament.
In summary, the colonists were not justified to separate from Britain because Britain was paying more taxes and the mother country needed complete respect. However, the colonists did not have any representation from parliament. Britain had the complete right to tax the colonist because they were being protected and Britain only care about the land.
