In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, John recommended his wife to stay in the nursery which was like a prison. “I should judge; for the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls.” (pg.370 Gilman) The things that she sees on the wall represents her self-reflection that she bonds with. Eventually, the wife staying in the nursery drove her into insanity due to John’s ignorance.
In the past centuries, society has often labeled gender roles based upon what you are expected to do according to your sex. In the past, gender and power often determine the opportunities you receive and the success you gain. The marriage between the husband and the wife in ancient times represent a child/father relationship. For many centuries, men have been the dominating power when it comes to society, culture, and politics however nowadays both men and women have equal opportunity. Men and women these days are in the workforce and are getting equal pay. Within the past century, society has accepted that women should get the treatment as men. I believe that men are still getting treater better than women, however in modern society are giving women more opportunities.
