I. The Ancient Healers

The word witch means different things to different people. To some, it conjures up images of the attractive young woman from the television show Sabrina the Teenage witch, or Samantha from the television show Bewitched. These “good” witches use their magical powers for good deeds, to punish bad people, or simply to create mischief.

Others think of a witch as an ugly old hag with warts on her nose, a long black robe, and flies across the sky on a broom, and cackles loudly at the misfortune of others. This more traditional image of a wicked witch is well-known from the movies such as The Wizard of Oz and the countless fairy tales throughout the centuries.

In recent times, another sort of witch has emerged- one of whose image exists somewhere between hag in black and the pretty blonde pixie who creates magic by twitching her nose. These modern witches belong to a religion known as Wicca. These witches, both women and men- believe they can peer into the future, manipulate the forces of nature, and bring love and money into the people’s lives.

The deeds of so-called witches were really quite benign: they had special knowledge of the healing properties of local plants and used this knowledge to treat their neighbours.
