swear I didn’t do it. I don’t even know how to use a gun” she exclaimed, trying to plead her innocence. She knew she wasn’t guilty. She knew who really did it. But she also knew that there was no way they’d believe her if she told them.
“Let’s take a recess” the judge said. “We will continue in one hour”
. . .
An hour later, the court reconvened. Sadie was surprised to find her mother, Veronica, sitting in the suspect box. A pale look of dread on her face. Her mother knew exactly what was going to happen. They weren’t gonna convict her daughter. Sadie had been upstairs the whole time and she had been downstairs fighting with John, and she knew that the neighbors had heard their fight. She didn’t know who had done it, but hope still remained that they would find the killer. She was positive she wouldn’t be found guilty. Sure every couple fights but that’s not reason to kill a man, they much see that. Veronica simply had to wait and see.
Hours passed. A judge would ask a question, she would answer. This went on until finally, the jury had reached a decision.
“Mrs. Veronica Holmes”, the judge said, “In light of the evidence produced by both you and several witnesses, I, hereby find you-”
The crowd silenced. Not a sound was heard, not a single whisper or utterance.
“Guilty”, he finished. Veronica’s heart leapt into her throat.c
“I hereby sentence you to serve a life in jail with no possibility of parole. Please escort Mrs. Holmes out of the building”
“No!”, Veronica shouted, “I didn’t do it I swear”
‘I’m sorry ma’am but the evidence against you is simply too strong
One of the guards, Sam, the same one that had escorted her to the courtroom, grabbed her mother by the arm and began to lead her out of the building
“Wait!” Sadie shouted, “At least let me say goodbye to her first”
“Alright” Sam said, “Just make it quick”
She came up to her mother and hugged her. Her mother tried to convince her she didn’t do it, but Sadie wasn’t having it.
Sam spoke up, “Okay say your final goodbye. She won’t be allowed visitors for a while”
The two hugged one last time. Right as they stopped, Sadie whispered the faintest thing in her mother’s ear, “Thank you, mom”
