Children seem to have been affected by poverty most than how their parents are affected in the novel. The young ones are very much alert of poverty that is affecting them and their society while their parents feel very much comfortable about it and have the mentality of that they giving to their level best. Esperanza feels so ashamed of the house that belonged to her, however her parents feel ok with the house and feel proud because at long last they have a house that they posses. This took place until when the nun came and told Loomis how the house she lived was not good at all and portrayed high levels of poverty. When the nun asked Loomis if she lived in such a house made her feel so much disapproved and as if that she was no importance. “You live there?” the nun asked the Loomis (Cisneros, 300). Then again the situation does not get better as they expected when they moved to the Mango Street. The parents of Esperanza had always desired to get a good house to meet for the debt of promise of a good house to their kids. The kids had been bored by the moving every year into a new place so they hoped they get a good house that they will settle once and for all. The children at times could pretend to hide the poverty that was surrounding them. For example, Earl works during times and lives alone, he looks for prostitutes, the kids does not understand and thinks that is his wife although they walk into the room lock for themselves and they don’t spend much time in the apartment (Cisneros, 317).
The Esperanza’s neighborhood is the poorest part in Chicago. The neighbors posses nothing but their houses only, anyone who does not these residents well is not able to know that might think something different from what is true. The residents who do not, their core work is just to discuss how about the people who loiter recklessly in the streets and their fear is that they can attack them with knives. They say “they are people who are stupid and got here by mistake and are lost,” (Cisneros, 328). The inhabitants of Esperanza’s block are good people who are friendly and she has no doubt on them and she is safe with them, she says, “all around all brown issafe,” (Cisneros,328).
Conclusion
Poverty in the society is an issue that has been affecting a lot of people. This is portrayed in the essay where the neighborhood of Esperanza, a lot of poverty is associated with it and in fact is termed as the poorest part in the region. In addition to that poverty makes people lose focus in life and behave like just men in the street where they are not recognized as people who have substance. Moreover, poverty is associated with shame and the poor try to hide their status as they do not like the type of houses. They always wish to move and their own houses which are better compared to the previous ones. Also prostitution is reported in the society as a result of poverty.
