The setting is at a lakeshore in the middle of the night. It is dark when they arrive to the camp and early morning when they leave. “The two boats started off in the dark”. “The sun was coming up over the hills… in the early morning on the lake…”. The setting is a bit misty because they can’t see the other boat and they don’t know were they are going. The Indians live in a poor environment. “Ahead were the lights of the shanties were the Indian barkpeelers lived”. They live in shanties, which is very close to cabins. They don’t have any medical surplice ore anesthetics to help the Indian lady in labor.
Indian Camp starts with an in medias res, which is very common in short stories to get a more exiting start and makes the reader interested in the story. Indian Camp is told in an objective 3rd person narrator. It is an omniscient narrator who sees everything and knows everything. The short story is build up upon the technic called the ”Iceberg technic”. You don’t get any information’s about the characters, you have to figure their personality out based on there actions in the story. This technic gives the reader a very exciting challenge because you have to use your own imagination and inference to find the inner meaning of the text.
The theme of Indian Camp is the passage of growing up. The journey of moving from innocence to experienced, which Nick does in the story. The message is that life doesn’t comes without a price. The Indian lady suffers to have her baby born and that refers to life. You cannot go throw a whole lifetime without experiencing pain and sorrow.
