the monster, struggles in society and he has difficulty fitting in. His appearance is far more than normal and people around him tend to run away from him in fear of his physical appearance. He becomes treated with an unbelievable hatred and rejection among anybody who crosses his attention. He starts to question himself on to why he was even here, not being able to fit in as there was none like him. "And what was I? Of my creation and creator I was absolutely ignorant, but I knew that I possessed no money, no friends, no kind of property. I was, besides, endued with a figure hideously deformed and loathsome; I was not even of the same nature as man." (108) He admits that he can’t control his physical appearance and it was his creator who is the cause of his looks. The monster finds it impossible to experience any socializing and relationship, as he goes through drastic hardships to try and associate himself with others. His aspiration for acceptance leads him to try and find people to develop companionship with in order to relieve his isolation.
The characters throughout the novel "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley, all experience the theme of isolation. For each character, isolation can either have a good outcome or bad outcome depending on how the character views it. For Victor, isolation has a destructive effect on him as he loses his mind after becoming so in depth with his creation, that he ends up forgetting about the ones who love him; his family and friends. The monster also experienced a destructive effect, not being welcomed into society due to his physical appearance. A specific character who benefits from isolation would be Victors friend Clerval. Clerval sets out to study world languages where he strives to develop skills on Arabic, Persian and Sanskit languages. Whether, the character isolates himself intentionally or not, this change can cause the character to benefit or be destructive.
