The title “Crossing” is a good fit for this story. The father is clearly trapped between two phases in his life and he is having a really hard time getting through it. The fact that him and his son gets trapped in the river and are questioning whether if they’re going to make it to the other side also symbolizes the fact that the father has to get through a tough time in his life and that he can’t do it alone. He needs a push to help him get back on his feet and move across to the other and brighter side in his life.
The setting in Crossing is a symbol of the relationship between the father and his son. The river in the settings is a symbol of the distant relationship that the father and the son has.
The theme in the story could be crossing a difficult time in your life. The father is really trying to build a relationship with his son and he’s trying to be a good role model, just like his own dad was for him once. The father has been really depressed for a while and he wants to get better and have a good relationship with his son.
We can always try to make all the right decisions, and it still fails in the end. Life may not turn out to be the way we expected, at all… Divorces are tough on everyone, and it’s hard to know what you are supposed to do after a divorce. When your life is crashing down on you, you feel alone and your can’t even put into words how you’re feeling anymore, you just have to stand tall and keep believing that everything will turn out right in the end.
