Education also plays an important role in the way people’s identity is shaped. Growing up you learn that you like or dislike a certain subject and that can change your whole perspective for the rest of your education. When you get to college, it can change what you pick as your major and what you want your job to be for the rest of your life. I also believe that it’s not only the education that shapes you but the educators you have. The way someone teaches a subject can make you love or hate it. It can also make you look at a subject in a completely different way than before because of the way a teacher portrays it. For example, I have always disliked English and not been very good at it but my senior year of high school my English teacher forced me to look at it in a different way. Although I have disliked the class English I have always loved reading and my teacher made me realize how I can use my knowledge about reading to be better in the subject. She also opened my eyes to many different styles of English and introduced me to the way I enjoy it the most. This changed my identity because we had so many lively discussions and different viewpoints about it that it shifted my perspective and made me see a whole new side of English. There are pros and cons when it comes to using social media for educational purposes. Although it is a magnificent tool with an infinite amount of information, there are many sources on the internet that give out false info. It is important to know what the reliable websites are otherwise it can alter your opinion on a subject, possibly for the worse. Even as adults, when reading things on the internet people are inclined to believe it and possibly change correct opinions into incorrect ones.
In today’s world everyone strives to be unique. I think this is great and it can open many doors for new ideas and innovations. Hearing so many other opinions is a great way to form your identity and really be yourself. In Saunders story Jon, it shows the negative side effects of not being able to grow up how you want and become the person you strive to be. I think that story is very opposite of how children in America grow up and reading it opens people’s minds and helps them gain perspective on reality. In our country, everyone is expected to make something of themselves and the great aspect of this is that we can become anything we want. As you grow up your identity is constantly being shaped by media, education, and exposure. Everyone is affected by these things differently and forces everyone to form their own individual identity.
