Women are bound to construct a gratifying aura as they bear numerous physical and emotional adversities that ranged from cramps to pregnancy scares. However, from the perspective of a patriarchal society, this natural journey of womanhood isn’t truly valued. Succeeding this feeling of empowerment, Clifton desires “then bring them back to gynecologists / not unlike themselves” (Clifton 17-18) . Clifton desires men to experience how the male-driven society undermines the feeling of fulfillment and empowerment obtained from completing the journey of menstruation and menopause. Clifton wishes for men who endured the adversities of menstruation and menopause to be acquainted with a male who lacks empathy or has a sense of indifference towards the strenuous experience of womanhood. Clifton want men to grasp the how a woman’s vitality is devalued by directly experiencing physical torment and emotional distress and then being disregarded for enduring these adversities,

By depicting the unsatisfactory circumstances situated by menstruation, exhibiting the hardship endured while undergoing menopause, and discussing how the male chauvinistic society undermined women’s emotions, Clifton yearns to enlighten the male mindset so that they can develop a sense of consideration towards the natural adversities embedded in the journey of womanhood. Women are inevitably withstanding physical and emotional ordeals generated by their physiology, therefore, men, who are incapable of ever enduring these adversities, should form a thoughtful mindset. However, the patriarchal society that constitutes the modern society holds the notion that men are physically and mentally more potent than women, though women have consistently carried equivalent aptitude. Therefore, society as a whole must enlighten themselves and engage in means to abolish this systematic sexism.
