The playwright wrote this play for African Americans and homosexual as well. The many scene changes of the play operated in a way the audience could recognize what was going on. The antique furniture and 19th century costumes helped create a better perspective of what the attire was like. Florida A&M’s production of the play was very well directed and performed. The sound effects, the cast, and the lighting of the production were exceptional and well thought out.
In the Florida A&M production of Blues for an Alabama Sky, the play gave suggestions of theatrical elements of set, costumes, and lighting. The lighting changed with the mood. It Would make you feel and imagine that you were in that new York city borough. It Was very interesting to see the actors match the character they were depicting.
Even though this play is based in the mid -19th century, it is still very relevant to the African American society today. Even though it is frowned on by others homosexuality in todays time has become something that is more accepted in all shapes forms and fashions here in America. Homosexual couples are more open and proud of their sexuality versus the 1930’s which was a “much less permissive period” (AllianceTheatre.org).
The character Guy, would most likely be happier if the play took plays in modern times because he would be more likely to be accepted. He wouldn’t be bothered by as many people as he was while the play was taking place. Even in America today, we have had many economic crisis that have caused many Americans to lose their jobs. The deep economic depression that the characters in the play were suffering from some what makes an insinuation to situations people are experiencing in todays time.
