World war two was the last time American Declared War. “We know how to win wars. We must learn how to win peace.” P. 66 It wasn’t until two nuclear bombs were dropped on Japan before they decided to give up. It took fighting and death before Germany decided to give up on their mission of dominance. When the American soldiers talked about the German soldiers there was a great deal of respect. They realized that these soldiers, “hadn’t come here to fear. They hadn’t come here to die. They had come to win. P. 88” At the conclusion of the way the book gives an account of the post war lives of the men who served in world war II with the easy company. Overall the group of survivors were very successful. Several of them became builders and engineers. Even those men that were injured and disabled found ways to earn law degrees and get jobs after the war.

It is such an interesting account that we are given from these men that started off as regular men and turned soldiers. They knew the risk of death was real but they believed in their hearts and minds that what was going on with Germany and Hitler was wrong. So they fought because they had to. You don’t often see men volunteering to join one of the bloodies events in history. These men came from all over the united states, from rich families and poor families and middle class families, with the same mentality, to do what is right. They had a very different mindset then what we have today. If it were personally me, I know what war is about so I wouldn’t volunteer to fight. However, for these men it was a great honor. They were doing something special and bringing a positive light on their family legacy. They left behind their jobs, wives, families, and friends and it was not guaranteed that they would make it back. I don’t know for sure if they actually thought about that happening however. For a great deal of some of them they didn’t have the chance to return home. And even after that took place the amazing thing is that the men still continued to fight on. When all seemed to be dead and lost, you were able to find the Easy Company fighting at the front lines in France and into Germany. That is amazing to think about. People so close to death not tucking there tale in between their legs and just fighting on.
