PLAYERS AND ACTIVITIES

Coffee is the second largest traded commodity in the world, only behind petroleum, Mexico is one of the top 10 producers of coffee in the world.

Coffee farmers:

These are the people that produce the coffee. In 2017 Mexico had over 500,00 small farmers with about less than 12 acres growing most of the country’s coffee in the south, close to Central America, with Veracruz, Chiapas, and Oaxaca being some of the most well-known producing regions.

Cooperative:

A cooperative is a non-profit organization with voluntary participation where members will typically pay a fee that is then reinvested into the coffee community, based on the logic that combined funds can achieve more than if spent individually. A coffee cooperative is a group of coffee producers cooperating to gain better access to resources, leverage better marketing and business opportunities, provide training, and more.

Intermediary:

These are specialists operating at origin that provides services and assistance for farmers to get their coffee to market.

Exporter:

These are the specialist operating at origin that process and commercialize coffee from farm gate level to meet the needs/specification of international buyers, known as the importers.

Importer:

This is an individual or a firm who brings goods and commodities from the origin country to the place of sale and exchange. Coffee is imported prior to roasting, as “green coffee.”

Roaster:

These are the specialists transforming the chemical and physical properties of green coffee beans into roasted coffee products. The roasting process is what produces the characteristic flavor of coffee by causing the green coffee beans to change in taste and maximise its shelf life.

Retailer:

A business or person that sells goods to the consumer.

Consumer:

One that acquires goods for direct use or consumption.
