Oil and gas are produced from 21 petroleum licenses/permits as stated by Roger Gregg in his article titled “Oil and Gas-The Maui Gas Field”, all of which are in the Taranaki basin. Exploration for oil and gas reserves includes treks in the Great South Basin and offshore areas near Canterbury. New Zealand has one oil refinery, the Marsden Point Oil Refinery, which is currently in operation today. The major industry is the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand. Most of the pipelines relative to oil and gas are owned and operated by First Gas, including the Maui pipeline, a 307 km pipeline that carries “78% of all natural gas produced in New Zealand” (Completion of Vector Gas Ltd Purchase by First State Funds, 2016).

The capital City of New Zealand is Wellington, which has been the countries capital since 1865. Wellington is a port city, located at the southern tip of the North Island of New Zealand, between Cook Strait and the Rimutaka Mountain Range. Since the 2010/2011 earthquakes devastated Christchurch City, Wellington is now the second most populous urban area of New Zealand next to Aukland. Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and main hub for transportation. Located in the North Island, it is also the most populous urban area in the country with a population estimated at 1.415 million in 2016. Among other larger known cities in New Zealand are Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, and Dunadin.
