Eco Campus is a national environmental management system that has been implemented in many well – known universities in all around the world. It provides a framework to manage sustainability to the institution. It is including the maximizing the usage of energy in efficient ways, reducing campus waste, promoting friendly environmental transportation, developing environmentally responsible purchasing policies, and green building (Havva, 2014).

Nowadays, the biggest challenge is to keep our environment clean is because the natural resources are rapidly decline such as trees, water and many more. It is also because the lacks of awareness among people in the world about how important ii is to take care of the environment. The environment issues such as global warming, ozone depletion, natural resources decline, and ecosystem destruction can affect our health. So, the reason why this study becomes so important is because it can make us aware in taking care of our environment and keeps it clean.

The finding of this study could be highly significant and beneficial especially to the following which Students will get benefit from this study because they are the main important role to maintain the title of eco-campus University. From this study, the student might be aware about why environment are important especially among them. Having a good or fresh air can make them feel more comfortable and are able focus on study. So, it will definitely help in improving their achievement toward their studies. Other than that, by having a clean environment, it can improve the healthiness in their lifestyle as students. It is not only for mental but to their physical as well. By looking at this study, students can imagine how could they be and live in eco-campus University. They also could know what they should do to maintain the green campus and achieve the University’s goals that want to be one of the excellent eco-campus Universities on 2018. Besides, this study also would be useful as a reference to the student in doing research in future which related to this study.

Furthermore, the study of students’ lifestyle in Eco-Campus University also can give a big impact to the government. It is because, this study is looking for good policies to maintain the eco-campus within the University in our country. So, it will help the government to choose the right policies that are suitable with the condition in our country since our country did not have a strong policy in maintain the greenness especially in the University. In addition, it also can change the environment policy from overcoming action to preventive action. Following that it will makes our rank in the world as a greenness country will rise. This study also can show to our government that green campus is very important and it might influence the government so that they can support the programs of eco-campus. Besides, government can help us to makes the societies unite in order to maintain the cleanness of the environment and giving the chances of other to hold power in every district instead of limited ownership power.

The significant of this study to the university itself is to make their goals achievable, which is to become an excellent eco-campus university in 2018. It is because by referring to this study, students can be fully aware about the important in taking care of the environment and they will definitely participate as well as supporting the program regarding the green campus project. Moreover, it also helps the university in formulating environmental policies. It can be useful to other students from not only from University Malaysia Sabah but also from all over the world. This could be their guideline in doing research about eco-campus. In addition, it can also make the University of Malaysia Sabah as a role model and a good example in managing and taking care of the environment. Thus, the other might change they lifestyle in their campus like what University Malaysia Sabah had done.

Other than that, this study will be beneficial to the society. It helps in the changes of the role and ideologies of social movements. It is because they will work together in order to help the campus to be an eco-campus University by participating in various environmental program and collaborating with other parties to overcome environmental issues. In conclusion, the Eco-Campus lifestyles are very important in order to help the University’ environment become more comfortable and better places to stay in. Besides, it will also help in reducing costs of major areas and improve the University’s corporate image and giving them a competitive advantage as well.

CHAPTER 2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Eco-Campus University

University should provide sample infrastructure to facilitate green activities and also to initiate more opportunities for students to get involve with green campus initiatives (Kagawa, 2007). University plays an important role in order to help students understand the eco-campus system and at the same time persuade them to implement it in their lifestyles. Universities and colleges are centers for transformation and social change by being world leaders in fields of research, innovation, and education. Therefore universities can be considered as key places to solve global problems and create progressive initiatives for current and future generations (Clarke, 2006). Universities, colleges or other institute is the factory of leaders that contributions in world pattern life. This situation also affects the problems and solutions to gives good life and better results in future. University Malaysia Sabah as a medium has born a leader as a role among the students to change the social environment in order to create new world in coming generation. From this, University Malaysia Sabah introduced the eco-campus concept in the past year in order to give the society awareness and does for practices in the life. University Malaysia Sabah defined Eco-Campus as a reference center that acts as a guardian of the environment, contributes to the global efforts toward sustainability by introducing environmental excellence in teaching, learning, research, infrastructure development, environmental management and operations, as well as all matters affecting the campus, in addition Eco-campus enables institutions to systematically identify, evaluate, manage and improve environmental performance and practical with the main purpose is to promote education and awareness of environmental protection and move towards environmental sustainability through good planning and operations and practicing management (Rosazman & Velan, 2015).
