I carried this flair of leadership to my first work experience at Larsen & Toubro Construction. L&T exposes the trainees to major responsibilities right from the day of induction. I took this as an opportunity to learn how teams work and how effective leadership works at an organizational level. I was trained in 3 different areas for the first 3 months, after which I was asked to lead the lifting team at Chennai metro rail works, based on my performance. I was given the responsibility to prepare lift plans, read through Load charts, engaging hydraulic cranes and to execute the lifting activity during night. Now, the major part of this included training laborers for the task and motivating them through Tool box meetings for executing the critical lifts safely. The challenges that were posed during this tenure as the Lifting In charge helped me shape myself as an efficient leader.

During the same period, I suggested a couple of project proposals for improving productivity and cutting down on operational costs. The first one was about automating the existing manual rail pulling activity, which won me numerous commendations from the top management of L&T. The other was about introducing the concept of Monkey Lift, to cut down the costs in engaging hydraulic cranes. Both these project ideas were approved and more importantly, were given a nod for implementation. Within weeks, I was shifted to Plant & Machinery department and was asked to take charge of the mechanical wing of the same. I was the only trainee at L&T to have been given the responsibility to head a department within a year of joining. These were instances which show my drive for innovation along with a passion for leadership.

What excites me about Cognizant, from whatever I’ve learnt about it is the open work environment where people have the freedom to innovate and to deliver meaningful work. It also encourages learning and growing by allowing fresh recruits to involve themselves in discussions with top management. I believe that I can hone my leadership skills and the innovative potential in me by joining Cognizant. I also believe that the role offered by Cognizant, with its presence in diverse sectors gives me the right opportunity to learn across domains. I strongly believe that I have the right set of values and skills to fit in an organization like CBC, which focusses on growing by leading and learning. Given an opportunity, I am confident that I will work to my full potential to deliver what is expected of me.
