Lawler, E. E & Suttle, J. L. (1973). Expectancy Theory and Job Behaviour. Organizational Behaviour and Human Performance, 9, 482-503.
This particular study by Lawler and Suttle investigated the expectancy theory and job behavior through collecting and analysing job attitude and job behavior data from 69 managers in a retail sales organization. Interestingly, the study establishes that expectancy attitudes are significantly related to some measures of effort and performance, but it failed to indicate that expectancy attitude causes performance. The article further discusses the limitations of the expectancy theory and recommends that further development and testing be done on the theory. This is highly important information about the expectancy theory, especially when it comes to applying the theory in real-life settings, as is the case with ABC Consulting Company.
Lunenburg, F. C. (2011). Expectancy Theory of Motivation: Motivating by Altering Expectations. International Journal of Management, Business and Administration, 15(1), 1-7.
In this particular study, Lunenburg explores how the Vroom’s expectancy theory motivates employees by altering expectations. He outlines how the Vroom’s expectancy theory differs from the content theories of Maslow, Alderfer, Herzberg and McClelland, in that it does not provide specific suggestions on what motivates organizational members. The article establishes that the expectancy theory has important implications for motivating employees. It identifies several important things that can be done to motivate employees by altering the person’s effort-to-performance expectancy, performance-to-reward expectancy and reward valences. Since the article takes a management standpoint, the information it provides is highly useful when it comes to applying the Vroom’s expectancy theory in a real-world setting, as is the case with ABC consulting.
McShane, S., Olekahns, M., & Travaglione, T. (2013). Organisational Behaviour: emerging knowledge, global insights. North Ryde: McGraw Hill Australia
This textbook presents Vroom’s Expectancy Theory of Motivation explaining the three factors of effort-to-performance, performance-to-outcome and valence. The textbook provides guidance to managers how they might use the three factors of the theory to increase employee motivation. Although a wide range of practical suggestions is made, the textbook does not provide any research that might support or disprove the validity of the contentions that are made. This lack of support from research is a limiting factor to the section in the textbook. This is a valuable starting point for further research on the theory through journal articles.
