The above map illustrates a typical purchasing method that a consumer would need to go through in order for them to get the right product delivered to their home. Each retail channel plays a significant role in this purchasing supply chain as each provide valuable product information directly to the consumer in order for them to make the right decisions. The purchasing aspect of a complex buy may look like the easiest task in the supply chain; however, there are various logistics that are associated in order for a consumer to make its final buying decision.

Consumer

The consumer decides that they want to make a complex purchase of replacing all their furniture, appliances and electronics with new ones.

Information

In order for the consumer to purchase the right products for their home, they require to do some research prior to going to stores to browse. The following information that should be gathered is:

What do they need?

- Assess the house and decide what items they want to replace or keep

- What is the budget?

- Take note of the size of the rooms that these items will be going in, especially if it’s furniture items. Consumer would need to figure out what dimensions is best to put items in each room.

- What type of items do they want to purchase and preferences? For example:

Living Room – Sofa/Love, Coffee/End tables/ Lamps (Style, colour, fabric, brand etc.)

Family Room – Sectional, Ottoman (Style, colour, fabric, traditional, contemporary), TV (Size, Brand, Up to date technology/features)

Kitchen – Casual dinette (how many chairs, size, colour, style) Refrigerator (Stainless steel, white or black, French door, bottom freezer etc.), Range (Stainless steel, white or black, coil, ceramic top, gas), microwave (Stainless steel, white or black, specific features etc)

Laundry Room – Washer & Dryer (White, stainless steel, coloured, top load, compact, full load, specific features etc.)

Dining Room – Formal dinette (how many chairs, size, colour, traditional, contemporary), china cabinet & buffet (size, colour, traditional or contemporary)

Basement – Home theatre seating sectional (size, colour, traditional or contemporary, manual reclining, power reclining), HDTV, home theatre system and blu-ray player (size, brand, up to date technology/features)

Master Bedroom – Bedroom Set (Dresser, mirror, 2x nightstands, chest, traditional, contemporary, colour, style), mattress (size, firm, plush)

Bedroom #2 - Bedroom Set (Dresser, mirror, 2x nightstands, chest, traditional, contemporary, colour, style), mattress (size, firm, plush)

Bedroom #3 -- Bedroom Set (Dresser, mirror, 2x nightstands, chest, traditional, contemporary, colour, style), mattress (size, firm, plush)
