ideas on ideas. They use junk or used things to create something useful with imagination.
Habitat and imagination work in parallel as a habitat that is playful and interesting is able to generate best imaginative ideas from their employees. So to make an organization innovative its habitat has to be developed accordingly.
Another important attribute is the resources which includes the product, data or research upon which the idea is build upon. People working in an organization are also the resources and each individual has their own contribution in the organization so managing these human resources in a company has become an increasingly important for firms performance and goal achievement (Ul Mujeeb Ehtesham, 2011) . In IDEO project the people from diverse fields were contributing to the main idea. They carried out brainstorming, research interviews and collection of data which were also the resources upon which they created a main idea.
Knowledge is a factor that is important as well cause an individual’s knowledge combined with others’ can create a much better idea. Knowledge creation foster a sound working environment for innovation (Sulaiman, 2015).When resources combine with knowledge then there arises a birth of an idea. Knowledge and resources come in parallel to create a much better idea. For an organization collecting resources and hiring knowledgeable people can lead to innovation.
Culture is another factor equally important in an organization. The culture of an organization highly influences its countless decisions and actions. It is the teamwork and diversity of an organization that creates a level of comradery among the team members. In IDEO there is no hierarchy and everyone is treated as equal. There is no age and title barrier so everyone can connect easily with one another. There is a culture of creative thinking and sharing the ideas. This kind of culture creates an openness among the individuals and the chemistry level increases among the members.
Attitude is what drives the culture in an organization. Attitude towards the organization, attitude towards the team members shapes the level of understanding among the workers. People should have a positive attitude and should be willing to accept failures to eventually develop a winning attitude. Just as in IDEO employees have a positive and optimistic attitude and are able to attain their goal before a deadline with team work shows the positive culture of the organization.
Affective skills
Similarly, IDEO has three affective skills that is openness to novelty, tolerance to ambiguity and tolerance for complexity. Openness to novelty in a sense that they always encourage newness or originality in ideas no matter how wild the ideas are. Tolerance to ambiguity in a sense that they always motivate the employees to get comfortable with the uncomfortableness. Whereas tolerance to complexity in way that the employees are able to solve the complex of tasks through trial and error method. These affective skills if applied to an organization can also make the organization an innovative one.
Conclusion
From this discussion we can conclude IDEO is a high commitment management organization that consists of project teams, flat hierarchy, individual autonomy, creativity, socialization of recruits etc. These traits make them different than the others and they can be applied by other organizations to enhance innovation. Similarly, every organization goals are different but to make an organization innovative, organizational attributes such as habitat, culture and resources have to go in parallel with individual characteristics such as imagination, knowledge and attitude respectively with an idea of creativity. Creativity is a component that enhances the ability of organizations to retain their competitive advantage as well as to stay ahead of their competitors (Parjanen, 2012).The change in economic climate, increasing global competition and rapidly changing organizations have made organization’s ability to innovate a key factor for success (Patterson, Kerrin, & Gatto-Roissard, 2010) and will help organizations to develop better operation. Such workplace environment, culture and habitat can be developed in other organization to develop the attitude of innovation into that organization.
