- Disadvantages of Big Data
While leveraging Big Data provides companies with the ability to transform their business dealings and better catering to their consumer base, there are some potential disadvantages associated with its implantation. The advent of Big Data issued into an abundance of unstructured data without already established methods of analyzing. Big data analytics require a different infrastructure system than what has historically been available for data warehousing and business intelligence. Creating new systems with the capabilities of collecting, handling and examining data opens the door for unseen costs that present barriers that organizations must now contend with. The complexities involved with this new tool is where the real cost lay, embedded in the operation and continual integration of Big Data within the preexisting systems. As the sheer data of Big Data expands, the more storage capacity to support such is required, indicating an increased cost.
As the sheer volume of available data continues to grow, capacities to store, aggregate, and analyze this data become the focal point. However, such large sets of consolidated data are security and privacy concerns. These mountains of data, particularly those related to consumer decisions, preferences, and more, introduces the need to somehow keep this information secure. With so much sensitive data available through Big Data, there is a greater potential for security breaches because of the incremental differences in how the data is stored, collected, and analyzed. Organizations leveraging Big Data will now also be charged with protecting Big Data’s private data, which presents additional expenses for these enterprises.
