Fuente Ovejuna is a play written by Lope de Vega and is one of the most important of his career as a writer. This play was written in Madrid on 1619. Fuente Ovejuna is a work of social and claiming content. It presents the rebellion of the people, united against the tyranny and injustice exposed at the end of the XV century and the beginning of the XVI century. This impressive work dramatizes real events that happened during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, in 1476, in a small Cordovan town called "Fuente Ovejuna".
The main characters are the two-young people in love Laurencia, Labrador of Fuente Ovejuna, daughter of Esteban the mayor of the village and Frondoso, Labrador. Next to them the town. On the other hand, Fernán Gómez de Guzman, Commander of the Order of Calatrava; Rodrigo Tellez Giron, Master of the Order of Calatrava; next to the judge. Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon act as a restorative power. Esteban, mayor of the city and father of Laurencia.
Fuente Ovejuna is a small town, which is under the control of the town's Commander, Fernán Gómez de Guzman, who does not respect the laws and abuses his power, betraying feudal principles and behaving like a tyrant, an unscrupulous cruel man who also when he could not seduce a woman, he would take them by force. Pastors and farmers suffer the injustices of feudal power.
Laurencia and Frondoso decided to get married, she was entranced by the bravery and strength that Frondoso possessed. However, the Commander had already assigned the beautiful Laurencia as his next target, but thanks to the brave man, she is saved from the clutches of the tyrant when she is found in the forest. The very angry Commander orders to imprison Frondoso, while Laurencia is taken to the Palace.
The people of Fuente Ovejuna, tired of the cruelty of their dominator who only abuse their power cruelly, exploded in such a way that they decided to assassinate the Commander. They gather stones, axes, pikes and, overcoming the fear of the weapons that the "enemy" possesses and the power that he holds, they finally manage to enter the house to leave with the head of the Commander without mercy.
Once the murder was perpetrated, the people agreed not to say who carried it out, Fuente Ovejuna was the murderer of his dominating tyrant.
