Personal

About the time we finish up with the overdose patient, we get a febrile newborn patient, who is brought in by his/her single mother. She is a first time mother and does not have the money to buy a thermometer or Tylenol for her infant. As we reflect, we realize that we have been in a similar position before as a first time mother and realize how scary it could be especially if there was not enough money to provide for our child. By putting ourselves in the mother’s shoes, we realize that this could be really difficult without the appropriate resources. Through the personal way of knowing, we help to provide a thermometer and a prescription for Tylenol, with the help of a social worker. We also educate the parent on where to go to be able to get the resources that she needs from the Health Department. Education is very important in health care. Through self understanding we are able to empathize with the mother to provide what she needs and meet her needs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I have shown how we use the four ways of knowing to bond with our patients and advocate for their care by reflecting on past experiences. The ways of knowing are used in our every day practice as a Nurse.
