Course of Action for Officer Steele

The Ohio Supreme Court found Officer Julien Steele guilty of the abduction and intimidation of RM. Steel received five years in prison with an additional five years of community control. (Lynch, 2013.) I believe that the state did the right thing in removing Julien Steele from the police force, and criminally punishing him for his crimes. In doing so, the state must now look back into every case in which Steele worked on to make sure no police misconduct took place to close the case.

Steele admitted to sometimes arresting people without probable cause to try to get others involved to cooperate. This says a lot about Steele’s code of ethics. Julien Steele would go beyond legal means to get a confession and close the case. This then poses the question of how many other officers on the Cincinnati Police Department have the same ethics as Steele. The state would need to investigate the department and find out if the problem was solely with Steele or if there are other larger problems within the department.

As far as Ms. Maxton, RM, and the other two children are concerned, I believe that the government and the state legislature should try to make amends. The emotional trauma that the Maxton family must have felt during that time is unimaginable. The state should do what they can for the Maxton family to make amends for the damage that was caused in the name of the Cincinnati Police department.
