athlete to be successful in professional sports it includes hard work. An athlete that works hard and takes PED’s has an advantage over a player who works his tail off. It’s not fair to the players that work hard and do not use illegal substances to gain more of an advantage. Gendin also says, “Athletes are always seeking some edge over their competitors, and the truth of the matter is that the use of steroids, if only they were legal, would be as legitimate a means of performance enhancement as any other” (Gendin 84). PED’s are not equivalent to more training. It gives athletes a big advantage including faster recovery time, prevention of injury and better endurance. It is not fair to athletes who work hard legally and follow the rules of major league sports. PED’s generally do not have a positive use for athletes.
Performance Enhancing Drugs are illegal substances that can be tempting to young athletes searching for a competitive advantage, but can lead to future problems with their body. Athletes are constantly looking for an edge on their opponents and are willing to do anything to have it. Changes in body appearances and behaviors are worth the risk for an advantage. Taking PED’s may sound like a great idea to an athlete at the time, but they are usually unaware of the future consequences. Integrity is shown to ones who achieve their goals without cheating and will be continually looked at as a true athlete. PED’s can potentially ruin a young athlete’s career and by keeping them illegal, it can help the future generations of professional sports.
