- After doing gravity filtration process place the flask in an ice bath for about 15 minutes to finalize the crystallization process.
- During the ice bath set up a Buchner Filtering system with filter paper.
Buchner Filtering System: 1. Get a filter paper large enough to cover all of the holes in the bottom plate and not yet curl up the sides of the funnel. 2. Clamp a filter flask to a ring stand and a piece of heavy walled tubing connects this to the water trap. 3. Use a rubber stopper and filter adapter to stick the Buchner funnel into the top of the filter flask. 4. Then the water trap is connected to a vacuum. 5.Turn vacuum on full blast and it should suck the filter paper down and is ready to be wet down with solvent. 6. Swirl and pour the crystals and solvent slowly and directly into the center of the filter paper. 7. Use a small amount of the same cold solvent and a spatula to remove any of the crystals left in the flask. 8. Leave the aspirator on and let air pass through the crystals to let them dry.
- After Crystals have dried in the funnel take the filter paper out carefully and place them onto a larger filter paper.
- To allow Crystals to dry even more place a beaker over top of them and write your name on them on a paper towel and place them in the designated location assigned by the instructor.
Safety: Avoid breathing the vapor or having direct contact with Acetic Anhydride. To be precautionary always wear gloves when handling chemicals in the lab. Be careful not to stop the experiment at any place where solid has not been filtered from the solution. When handling the hot flask use a folded paper towel to avoid burns. Always have safety glasses on while in lab and experiments are being performed.
