This is such an amazing quote. And all these men obviously were not crazy because of what they did. They were capable of recording what was put in the bible and they were capable enough to be able to talk to people a preach sermons coherently. There are records of many of the disciples teaching. Acts 4:8-12 says,” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people, 9 if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11 He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
So these men were most definitely not crazy. They were just simply, radical. They personally knew Jesus and loved him. They let him change them because they recognized that they were sinners and needed a savior. So I do believe in the eyewitness accounts of these men and I believe all that they wrote.
Now after Jesus resurrected he appeared to more then five hundred people.
1 Corinthians 15:6 says, “After that He appeared to more the five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep.” So if you trust in the eyewitness accounts in the bible this this is also trustworthy. If this is trustworthy then that means Christianity is trustworthy because a large part of Christianity is living in the victory of Christ’s resurrection and living in the truth that death has been defeated. All of this is trustworthy because of the eyewitness accounts are trustworthy in the bible and we already know we can trust the bible. It all backs itself up.
I have heard the argument that maybe Jesus was a crazy man that happened to gather twelve other crazy men and they just kind of lived in a cult and were willing to die for Jesus because they were just crazy. The only problem with that argument is that Josh McDowell’s quote doesn’t only apply to the twelve disciples. It applies to all five hundred of those people that Jesus appeared Himself to. And then how could you explain all of the martyrs to this day who personally never saw the face of Jesus Christ and never got to know him face to face like the disciples did.
Now lets look at what the bible says about what is means to be a Christian. I stated early that what it means to be a Christian is to be Christ like. This is the fundamental base of Christianity but the bible says more. Romans 6:4-7 says, “4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.” Humanity can now walk in the newness of life and justification because Jesus died on the cross and rose from the grave. His resurrection also means that we became a new creation born again into life. Christianity is not only being Christ like but it is also our identity and how we continue to walk in this miracle of new life.
Christianity is truth because it is set apart from religion and set apart from the world. Christianity is truth because of the person of who Jesus Christ is. Christianity is truth because of the eyewitness account of the people who recorded the events at that time. Christianity is truth because it explains the sin of a human heart and still justifies it. Christianity is truth because of how Christians are valued as Children of God and justified before God. I can have all these arguments about how Christianity is the truth but there is only one true way of knowing if Christianity is true or not. And that is by getting to know Jesus Christ. Christianity is a relationship between you, God, and the Son of God and it exists out of love. Matthew 22:35-40 says, “35 One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” The first two greatest commandments both involve love. Not just love but loving someone else first. The entirety of Christianity and the Gospel is centered on selflessness. These are all the reasons why Christianity is the truth and why it is credible. Jesus Christ is the basis that we claim Christianity to be truth.
