a few months ago. Nearly every advertisement on TV was one candidate pointing out flaws of the other candidates. Perhaps these politicians should take a lesson from the Bible, "But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all...Let what you say be simply ’Yes’ or ’No’; anything more than this comes from evil" (Matthew 5:34+37). By taking oaths, we assume that the human race has a tendency to lie. Jesus demands his followers be truthful which makes oaths unnecessary. In order to be a person of integrity, we must say what we mean and do what we say. This does not only go for our spoken words but also for in our delivery (think again about those political ads). Truth is a black or white term and little white lies are still lies.
I feel like the teaching itself is not challenging to the world at all. What I find challenging is how mankind got so far off base. How did we end up living in a world filled with such hate, greed, and lust? I feel that if we could get back to following this teaching, it would dramatically change the world in which we live. I think the most important message that can be taken from the Sermon on the Mount is "Do to others whatever you would have them do to you" (Matthew 7:12). I believe if you can live by those words, following the rest of Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount will come as well. I try to instill these words into my children on nearly an everyday basis.
The part of the sermon that speaks to me the most is the teaching of the dependence of God. I am a worrier. I worry about everything from groceries to bills to the health of my kids. I like to have everything planned out and feel anxious if I do not know what is happening next. Matthew 6:25-34 spoke to me. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?" I need to take time in my life to appreciate the things that God has given me and stop worrying about what He will provide to me next.
