Next Odysseus and his crew land on Lamos Island but here the queen eats part of his crew and they luckily escape. They then land on the goddess Circe’s island. Circe has pig poison and turns the crew into pigs. Odysseus gets into the good graces of Circe and the crew is then returned back to men. Odysseus asks for Circe’s help to get home but she tells him he must travel to hades for the aid he needs to get home. On their quest the crew again goes against orders and kills Helios oxen and again more of his men are killed and all of their lives are in danger.

Odysseus finally makes it home, but he must come in disguise. Everyone thinks he has died and are trying to take over his land and marry his wife. Odysseus must prove to his wife, even though she thinks it is him, and kill the others who are trying to take over his land. Because he has been gone so long Odysseus wants to make sure his wife is still loyal to him, he gets in touch and reunites with his son and then must destroy all of the others trying to win his wife’s favor.

After all the years and trials and tribulations Odysseus is finally home. The verse “Now from his breast into his eyes the ache of longing mounted, and he wept at last, his dear wife, clear and faithful, in his arms, longed for as the sun warmed earth is longed for by a swimmer spent in rough water where his ship went down under Poseidon’s blows, gale winds and tons of sea.” (259-265) explains how happy he is to be finally home.
