Dr. Gelia T. Castillo, was a valedictorian since elementary up to high school. She obtained a Magna Cum Laude A.B. Psychology, college of liberal arts in the University of the Philippines. She finished an M.S. in Rural Sociology from Pennsylvania State University and holds a two honorary doctorate (honoris causa) degrees in Science in Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands and Ateneo de Manila University. She became a professor in University of the Philippines, Los Banos and earned the distinction of being conferred to the rank of being a University Professor.

She has always been guided by the principle that “science must always serve a human purpose” and believes that “when the best science and scientists are devoted to the problems of those who have less in life that is equity and ethics at its best.” As a social scientist, she focused on agricultural and rural development, including health, gender, environment, poverty, inequality, capacity development and participatory research. Also as a pioneer in rural sociology, her initial work focused on the Filipino farmers’ response to new technology and the factors that affect the agricultural and rural development in the Philippines. In all her researches, she always makes sure that the results would be relevant and responsive to the needs of the rural population.

In her career she already published a number of books including, “Toward Understanding the Filipino Farmer”, this book was published in the US which proves that she is active internationally in the issues about rural sociology. “All in a Grain of Rice” is one of first known book about the Filipino farmer’s response to the social and economic implications brought by the new rice technology of the green revolution. This books talks about the Philippine rice situation and the changing Filipino rice farmer.

Her greatest contribution lies in her humanizing science, because for her, science must serve a human purpose. Her writings make her readers empathize with the burdens of the farmer, the plight of rural women, and the frustrations of community organizer

Dr. Czarina Saloma[pic 5]

Dr. Czarina Aya-ay Saloma-Akpedonu, sociologist, was named Outstanding Young Scientist by the National Academy of Science and Technology. She is the youngest of three children of Engr. Ciriaco Balangkig Saloma, manager of the Bohol Power Grid of the National Power Corporation in the 1980s and Celerina Gatal Aya-ay, a public school teacher, both from Baclayon, Bohol. She finished elementary and high school in Holy Spirit School. She finished her Bachelor of Arts Major in Sociology in University of the Philippines and she graduated as a Cum Laude. She earned her M.A. in Population Science from Peking University in the People’s Republic of China and her doctorate degree was from the Universitaet Bielefeld in Germany with the award of Magna Cum Laude.

Her first published book is entitled “Possible Worlds in Impossible Spaces: Globality, knowledge, gender and Information Technology in the Philippines.” Her book is about how information technology has affected or impacted the Philippine Society. It shows the two worlds that are present in our society. The technological sphere where she state that women participate in and the other one about global-local technological encounters. She continues to study the relationship between information technology and society, particularly, the field of information and communication technology and development.

She is concurrently the Director of the Institute of Philippine Culture of the Ateneo de Manila University and Her professional responsibilities included being Chair of Ateneo's Department of Sociology and Anthropology (2005-2010), President the Philippine Sociological Society (2006–2007) and Vice President of the Research Committee on Science and Technology of the International Sociological Association (2010–Present).
