Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

Introduction

Rizal High School was firstly named Pasig Secondary School back in 1903. Then it was renamed Rizal High School when it was expanded in 1914. Back then, Pasig City was a part of Rizal province. When Metro Manila has added Pasig City in the capital cities of the country, the name of the school stuck. Rizal High School was recorded as the largest secondary school in 1993 by the Guinness Book of World Records. Since then, it became a popular school with great students, several buildings, and a quality faculty. The school system of Rizal High School follows the curriculum. Now, with the advent of K-12 program under the Republic Act 10533 or Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, Rizal High School developed Senior High School buildings for upcoming grade 11 and grade 12 students. The teachers were hired for grade 11 as per Department of Education. Rizal High School underwent significant changes that is needed for adaptation of the modern curriculum. The school still needs more improvement though, the new curriculum needs a lot more than what the school can provide like facilities, utilities, teachers for specific tracks, and preparedness. The new school system is made for the students to be globally competitive and skillful, but since the preparation of the country is not on par with time and resources needed, it might not show up to be beneficial for the first time. Rather, it is more of experimental for first time implementation of K-12 that will either be success or fail, but the government pushes this for the modernity of our school system. Parents complain for extra years of giving financial amounts to their students, but studying is free and DepEd gives vouchers for private schools, so it is worthier for the skill-improvement and learning for two extra years to prepare for the students.
