The true intention of the U.S was to gain more land, not to end a dispute.

Yes they are similar, but not identical. Sullivan discusses manifest destiny and that the U.S had a to overspread the continent for the free development of its growing population. Alcaraz says how from day one, America planned on dominating the continent. They both express feeling of transcontinental expansion and the benefits it provides like access to both oceans and quick communication, but have different viewpoints on whether they support or oppose it with Alcaraz opposing and O’Sullivan supporting transcontinental expansion.
