A big part of Madrid being able to rise was the monarchy. The marriage between Isabella

of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon in 1469 started the period of success for Spain. Their marriage was able to unite the Kingdoms of Aragon and Castile which had not happened since 1035. Since they were cousins they needed special permission that was eventually written by

Ferdinand and his father. Once they were able to both succeed their parents, Isabella the throne

of Castile in 1474 and Ferdinand the throne of Aragon in 1479 they were able to strengthen the

royal power. Their marriage was one of mutual benefits in that both kingdoms kept their own laws and customs and they both had mutual goals for their kingdoms. They wanted to conquer the Kingdom of Granada which they did in 1492, they also wanted the support of parliament, they wanted to be able to control the peace and order in the reduction of aristocratic power and the concentration of political authority. Now instead of working against each other they were able to work together to achieve all their national goals with great success.

Ferdinand and Isabelle combined were able to lay the foundation for Spain’s Golden Age, a time in which Spain became the largest empire of the world. They gave precedent for being able to explore and grow. We are a product of the choices made by the past. Madrid has contributed to Society with its past. Ferdinand and Isabelle getting married led to their kingdoms being reunited, leading to them accomplishing and conquering more land and wanting them to explore and being open to Columbus’s idea. Which led to the discovery of the new world, expansion, and even help shaping not just Spain , but also society and eventually Western Civilization. Western Civilization has been considered “ A culmination of a long historical process of human choices”. (4) All the past decisions have affected and shaped society after these choices have been affected. [pic 2]
