If they are used properly, they could reduce the chances of such sites contaminating major waterways and ecosystems” (Donati). When the industries are mining to get the ores they are at risk of exposing toxic chemicals. The most common tends to be arsenic. These microbes hold a lot potential because they are different from the other bacteria with the waste-eating properties because “ this is the first time that microbes … can survive in the very harsh conditions expected in radioactive waste disposal sites”(Kowalchuk). Solution don’t need to be limited to eliminating the issue, they can also be ways of prevention that are easier to accommodate to than using microbiological technology. “Pollution prevention (P2) is reducing or eliminating waste at the source by modifying production processes, promoting the use of non-toxic or less-toxic substances, implementing conservation techniques, and re-using materials rather than putting them into the waste stream” (Wilhern). Like the saying bygones are bygones, pollution should be taken in that same regard. It has happened and now nothing can be done by blaming the issue on others. The best thing is to keep the issue at bay and prevent it from getting worse, which can be done in several manners and not by only one group. “With the passage of the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990, the green chemistry movement was initiated. The 1990 Act was unique because it prioritized reducing the amount of pollution generated” (Wilhern). With the beginning of the green chemistry movement, many innovative ideas were introduced to prevent pollution such as, atom economy or design for degradation. Atom economy involves using chemicals that have less toxicity level to reduce the amount of waste (Cann). Design for degradation is the idea of having chemicals that break down at the end of their function which will get rid of the idea of chemical waste dumping as a whole (Cann). Bioleaching may not be accessible for every country, but the prevention techniques are something every country can do.
Industrial water contamination is thought to be an issue for the wildlife, but as the industries continue to grow, the contamination will worsen and affect a greater mass of people. Currently, issues of poisoned soil, seafood contamination, stunting the growth of developing countries have arised, but if this problem continues to grow there will be nothing you can do to fix it. Simple prevention techniques can stop this issue from worsening. Along with that, due to our technological advances we can use bacteria to eliminate the chemical waste that industries have. With these prevention techniques and solutions industrial water contamination will become less of a danger for the developing world.
