Interviewer: In your opinion, what is the law that affected South Africa the most still and still has an effect on South Africans to this day?
Interviewee: I think all sorts of laws…you know the Separate Development Act. I think all the laws that forbade people from interacting across the colour line, affected South Africans a lot because it means that people, they either undermined the people or they felt inferior and they did not understand one another, people from different cultures. Which means that even today we still have problems because of racial misunderstandings, people not appreciating the cultures of other people, thinking that they’re either superior or inferior which is equally bad whether you think you are superior or inferior its equally bad for society, people should realize that all people are equal, all cultures are the same and they need to appreciate every culture and learn from them and in south Africa we still have instances that are race related like racism because of the many years of apartheid, the separateness that was created by government.
Interviewer: Did you think that Apartheid would ever come to an end?
Interviewee: I did, as I have said, you know I grew up in rural areas and the more I became aware of apartheid laws, the more they got repealed, some of the laws that I didn’t know existed, I only knew about them when they got repealed. Like the mixed marriage act, when people couldn’t marry across colour line, I wasn’t aware that was the case in South Africa until I heard that, the law had been repealed and many other things like going to the same schools or universities. When I became aware of it that’s when the laws started to change. So I did believe it would end and there were many people like Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu who was always assuring people that apartheid would end and we’d have a non-racial society.
Interviewer: Thank you for your time.
Interviewee: Thank you, thank you for having me.
