During Jefferson’s administration, he stood by his belief that the “will of the people,” through elections, provided the right guidance for directing the course of the republic. From the start he believed that the central government should remain simple and he ensured that during his presidency; he reduced the size of the federal government, reduced the size of the army, and limiting the federal government due to his very strict interpretation of the Constitution of the United States. In 1834, political opponents of President Andrew Jackson formed a new party in order to compete with Jacksonian Democrats – they called themselves the Whigs. The national two-party system was Jackson’s legacy. His passion for party organization erupted from his own difficulties with Congress. Instead of passing a legislative program, he wanted to stand in its way. He formed direct links with voters in order to fight against Congress, as he spoke with powerful language and became the people’s sole defender against the minions in Congress. President Lincoln’s commitment to preserving the Union and justification for democracy no matter the consequence he might face himself was the reason that the Union prospered. In the process of saving the Union and putting an end to slavery, he defined the fabrication of a more perfect Union in the aspect of economic equality and liberty that united the citizenry behind him. Rutherford B. Hayes strengthened the Republican Party. He ended Reconstruction and enhanced the power of the presidency. Because he relied heavily on the public and their opinions, he traveled more than any President before him and used every opportunity to speak on matters and issues and bypassed Congress in order to speak directly to the people. The role of a president in political ideologies is to be able to make difficult policy decisions and develop ideologies that justify these certain choices, such as the presidents listed above.
