The United states is well known for their history, something that is most intriguing to people about the USA’s history is the different various types of tribes that were settled all throughout the land before the European people showed up and got in contact with them. The records kept throughout time indicates that there are 562 recognized american indian tribes. The Dakota sioux tribe was located in the northern central part of America.
The Dakota Sioux tribe was from the northern central part of the unites states, they settled in both North and south Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, throughout time the tribe started to travel more south, as of today the Dakota tribe is settled in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Saskatchewan . A lot of people believe that the Lakotas and the Dakotas are different tribes, but in reality there is no difference in them it is just the way different people pronounced their names.There are about thirteen sioux political division and just about half of them pronounced their name with an L “Lakota”. Like I mentioned before, there were thirteen sioux political divisions, they all made up a grand total of seven actual major tribes within. There were the Mdewakantonwan, Sisseton, Teton, Wahpekute, Wahpekute, Yankton, and the Yanktonai Sioux. The name Sioux means little snake, most of the people from this tribe used this name when they were speaking English, due to the fact that their main dialects were sioux, and french.
The Dakota tribe had some really interesting spiritual thoughts and ideas. They based their beliefs and events in sweatlodge, pipes drums, singing, dancing, prayer and many other things. They called big celebrations “pow wow” these type of ceremonies were something like the rain dance, or sun dance. They were big believers of sacrifices, so they had ritual of sacrifice usually the animal they used to sacrifice was a sheep or a goat just like in the early christianity, Dogs were often a big part of their religious feasts as well. They had many types of spiritual ceremonies, and rituals. They based their beliefs and religion on the belief that everything had a soul or a spirit, but their main god was Manitou “the great spirit”
The Dakota tribe was a very tough tribe most young men grew up to be big warriors or hunters. The tribe usually fed off of animal meat, anything that they could hunt like elk, bear, wild turkey, or buffalo. They didn’t always just eat meat, they would also eat vegetable, fruits, grains, or wild berries, when any of this supplies were running low for the tribe they would eat something called pemmican which is dried buffalo meat with some spices.
