two blocks away from his home in Washington. Three years after their marriage they gave birth to their eldest child Olive. Before Benjamin Jr. Was born his family had been stationed at several bases such as Fort Washakie, Wyoming; Fort Robinson, Nebraska; Wilberforce, Ohio; Monrovia, Liberia; and Fort D.A Russell. After Benjamin Jr was born his father served on the Mexican border from 1912 to 1915 during the Mexican Revolution. During this time, his father’s duties and unsettled conditions in the area effectively cut short the family’s visit at Fort Russell having them to move back to Washington for the remainder of 1913. In February 1915 his father had become a captain and was ordered back to Wilberforce University, a black institution, as a professor or military science and tactics. The assignment was to keep his father being a commander over white soldiers. He was restricted to safe assignments such as JROTC units at black colleges, black national guard units, and military attaché to Liberia. Benjamin Sr. was happiest when being in duty with the troops because he had been promoted to Major and lieutenant colonel even though he faced racial discomfort with some of the regimental commanders. When he and his family joined at Fort Russell white officers’ families largely ignored his wife and children. Therefore, when he retired he wanted to move his family overseas to southern France, to leave behind racial discrimination. On February 9, 1916, his younger sister Elnora was born and nine days after her birth his mother passed away.
