affects the human spirit.
William Goulding used many examples of how the boys on the island coped with the adversity of being isolated on the island. Each of the characters acted in different ways the adversity they were faced with, and each boy was affected spiritually in different ways. On the island, the boys were faced with a trial and had to decide what there actions we going to be over the course of their stay, Goulding uses these actions to demonstrate how adversity affects the human spirit. For example, Ralph was elected leader at the start of the novel, Ralph reacted in he most outgoing way. Ralph was determined to keep everybody safe even if that meant giving up “play time” and building huts or meeting places. Goulding used the example of Ralph to demonstrate what should happened when you face adversity, fight on and endure to the end. Goulding also used the example of Jack. Jack was the epitome of Ralph, he believed that the island was a vacation and should be spent having fun, swearing, and fighting others. Goulding included Jacks reaction to show how adversity can affect people differently. Peoples reactions and actions toward adversity may be different but no matter the reaction everyone will be affected spiritually.
