luxurious clothing, expensive drinks, music, dancing, and entertainment. Ilsa and Rick have this hope that they will one day be in love like they were in Paris. They hope they can leave the country and escape the bad times and be together forever.

Rick offers hope to a young couple who does not have enough money to complete their travels to America. An underage women approaches Rick asking to speak with him, he complies. She asks Rick what kind of a man is Captain Rayno and if he will stick to his word. The Captain is willing to give the young couple their exit Visa in order to leave the country. Rick then goes to the young girl’s husband and assists him with his gambling bets. The husband wins some money and Rick tells him to cash in his winnings and never come back.

Rick tricked Ilsa into thinking he will accompany her on the plane to America, but, in fact, Rick wants Victor to go to America with Ilsa. Rick says that they will most likely end up in a concentration camp. Rick is sacrificing his way out of Casablanca for Ilsa, the love of his life, to make sure she has a bright future whether Rick is in it or not. “We will always have Paris,” Rick says trying to remember the good memories he shared with Ilsa.

Ilsa also exemplifies selflessness when she does not show up to the train station with Rick. Ilsa knows that a life of running from the police is not a happy life. In order to make the right decision, Ilsa must break Rick’s heart for the second time.
