However, in my opinion, it takes away the competitive aspect in sports and any other competition.
By losing kids learn many valuable lessons that they will need in the future. “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career….26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed”(Michael Jordan). By losing kids learn that they need to try harder. Michael Jordan has lost many times and by losing he got better and better until he became the best. “....Realize that without losing, winning isn’t so great.” (Milano) Kids need to understand that losing is just a factor of life. In losing kids learn to get better and overall become better people. Participation awards block out the factor of losing and take away many of the valuable lessons that kids learn from loss.
Giving kids participation awards stunts their ability to grow from losing, and ruins their self esteem. Parents and people can help prevent problems their kids will face in the future from receiving participation awards by teaching their children that it is ok to lose. If we give participation trophies out to kids for losing it will ultimately teach them that it is ok to lose and how to recover from a loss. It also ruins the competitive aspect for kids who are good at what they do. Participation trophies have too much of a negative effect on kids and kids should not be rewarded a prize for something they didn’t deserve or earn.
