Paragraph 3: masculinity (Jurassic park).
In the film Jurassic park, Spielberg explores the theme of masculinity through the interesting non-diegetic and diegetic sounds whilst also having interesting angles and shots. The scene of Tim, Lexy and Mr. murphy in the car searching for the T rex is a perfect example of Masculinity. The diegetic noise of the rain falling displays to the audience that it is a stormy night. the extreme close-up shot of Mr Murphy’s anxious face whilst hearing the diegetic sound of the T-rex stomping to the car shows the audience that men are not always brave. A low angle shot is then used to show the expression of Lexi’s face while a Lamb leg suddenly falls onto the cars sun roof. The audience then sees expression on Mr Murrays face while he sees the terrifying T rex eat the rest of the lamb. The diegetic noise of the T rex growling makes Mr Murphy run out of the car to go to the bathroom whilst leaving his kids out of nervousness. Spielberg shows that in this scene, men aren’t always Muscular and should never be compared to women as the stronger one.

Spielberg introduces the theme masculinity through bravery into the film jaws. This is shown in the ending scene of the film through a close-up shot which shows Brody precisely aiming a gun towards the great white. This shows the audience that Brody isn’t afraid to shoot a gun. This shows that chief Brody is courage’s enough to save he’s town by shooting a firearm. The close-up builds tension and nervousness towards the audience. This scene shows the masculinity Brody has by displaying he’s body movement and facial expressions. Spielberg seeks the horror of nature in its own environment while man overpowers nature in this film.
